Gender Roles in Society Essay -- Sociology Gender Sex Dominant Essays
Gender Roles in Society Since the beginning of time men have played the dominant role in nearly every culture around the world. If the men were not dominant, then the women and men in the culture were equal. Never has a culture been found where women have dominated. In ââ¬Å"Society and Sex Rolesâ⬠by Ernestine Friedl, Friedl supports the previous statement and suggests that ââ¬Å"although the degree of masculine authority may vary from one group to the next, males always have more powerâ⬠(261). Friedl discusses a variety of diverse conditions that determine different degrees of male dominance focusing mainly on the distribution of resources. In The Forest People by Colin Turnbull, Turnbull describes the culture of the BaMbuti while incorporating the evident sex roles among these ââ¬Å"people of the forestâ⬠. I believe that the sex roles of the BaMbuti depicted by Turnbull definitely follow the pattern that is the basis of Freidlââ¬â¢s arguments about the conditions that determine vari ations of male dominance. Through examples of different accounts of sex roles of the BaMbuti and by direct quotations made by Turnbull as well as members of the BaMbuti tribe, I intend on describing exactly how the sex roles of the BaMbuti follow the patterns discussed by Freidl. I also aim to depict how although women are a vital part of the BaMbuti culture and attain equality in many areas of the culture, men still obtain a certain degree of dominance. Friedl argues that ââ¬Å"the source of male power among hunter-gatherers lies in their control of a scarce, hard to acquire, but necessary nutrient-animal proteinâ⬠(263). This is proven by the people of the BaMbuti since they do in fact rely on the hunter-gatherer method which is a process where the people depend on wild plants and animals for subsistence. Although the women of the BaMbuti culture contribute a substantial amount to the hunting process by foraging for mushrooms and nuts and by driving the animals into the net, the men actually kill the animal and distribute it among the tribe. Turnbull states that ââ¬Å"survival can be achieved only by the closest co-operation and by an elaborate system of reciprocal obligations which insures that everyone has some share in the dayââ¬â¢s catchâ⬠(107). According to Friedl this distribution obligates others to the hunter and ââ¬Å"these obligations constitute a form of power or control over others, both men and... ... to the degree of dominance held by men in the BaMbuti culture. Although this degree might not be extremely high and women do acquire a certain level of equality with the men, the patterns expressed by Friedl in ââ¬Å"Society and Sex Rolesâ⬠are consistently followed throughout Turnbullââ¬â¢s book, The Forest People. The Forest People is a great example of the patterns expressed by Friedl in her article. Friedlââ¬â¢s hypothesis that men tend to dominate based on the amount of resources distributed and on the division of labor based on sex is proven through the actions of the BaMbuti people. The present dominance that exists by men in nearly every culture is one that is likely to continue for many years if not forever. Friedl suggests that ââ¬Å"as long as women spend their discretionary income from jobs on domestic needs, they will gain little social recognition and powerâ⬠(269). She proposes that the only way women will attain equality is to ââ¬Å"gain access to positions that control the exchange of resourcesâ⬠(269). If in fact women do continue to gain these higher positions, then male dominance may eventually become obsolete and egalitarianism may one day become the basis of industrial societies.

Good Teachers Essay
Abstract A good teacher is hard to find. One that really loves to teach students and is effect in what they teach. I have only had a few who have inspired me to teach because of their ability to teach effectively. A good teacher is effective in what they teach and they inspire their students. I feel that every student should have the benefit of a great teacher. One that is prepared for the class and apt to teach with clarity and understanding. It is not always good to have one that is just doing it to earn an income. Good teachers are what make the world better, as we learn every day, and if we listen we are always in a class of some type. In this world of fast learning and growing job opportunities we have to be taught by the best teachers so we are able to stay on the top of our business ââ¬âworld. I feel that every teacher needs to be able to change their studentsââ¬â¢ lives and be experts in their field of teaching. The teacher has to understand how each student learns. Without a doubt we must be able to reach our world and be able to understand what we are trying to learn. ââ¬Å"A Good teacher is someone that is able to make a difference in someoneââ¬â¢s lifeâ⬠(Hassett). What makes a good teacher able to teach anybody? Most of people that go to class really want to learn and want to be there. One of the main things in a class room or class setting is for the class to feel free to learn. I feel that every teacher needs to go to college and not to an online school. They need to be able to be in a class room setting so they can understand what their teacher does to prepare them for their class and study. I think one of the most important things for learning is to see it in action and to be able to understand how the right way to teach, and not just trying to make something out of nothing. Most of the teacher need toà get a degree from an accredited college or university that is a reputable teaching institution and able to give the aspiring teacher the proper training. One of the main things in learning is to be preparing for class. The teacher needs to have paper and book and all the supplies. Most teachers need to be able to pass the state board for teaches for them to get their certification to teach in the state of Georgia. Most of teachers in Georgia are teaching without a license because there is a shortage of teachers. This is causing a lot of students to get teachers who have not really been qualified to teach. Teachers need to learn how to listen and to understand when a child is in need or has a special need. Every teacher needs some type of training as there is college just for teachers. The Time it takes to prepare for a class is important as it prepares the teacher to teach effectively. Most of the students will watch their teacher to make sure they know what they are talking about. There has to be a safe environment for the student to learn. Most of the students need to be push to the point where they can learn and how they learn. The teacher needs to be able to detect what learning style the student has. One of the most important things that I love is the fact that they took time out of their busy schedule to check on me and make sure I did not have to repeat the class. They sent information to make sure I could get it done and I am grateful for that. ââ¬Å"A good teacher is someone that knows their craft, in other words, they know what they are teaching. A good teacher knows the ins and outs of what they are teaching. A good teacher enjoys teaching others, their craft and seeing their students learnâ⬠(Davis). A teacher also has a passion for people and gets an enjoyment of others success. A teacher shows their student that they care when no one else is showing the student that they care. A teacherââ¬â¢s job is not just a Job. As it is not just to go to work and get a paid check. It has to be a personââ¬â¢s passion; itââ¬â¢s what makes them thrive. Sometime they have to work on days when they donââ¬â¢t get paid just to make sure the students are learning and able to pass the test. A teacher has to show that they want to be there and really enjoy helping people. A teacher never needs to tell a student I got my degree you need to get yours. ââ¬Å"A teacher must stay informed of what they are teaching, in other words if there is new material that goes along with their subject they should learn the new material. This is called personal development. â⬠(Martin-Kniep). A teacher also gives discipline when it is needed because they realize if you do not show discipline in the time of need it can cause the student to have an unstructured life. ââ¬Å"A teacher prepares their students to be successful and persistent in their goals in life. A teacher is a motivator to their students and they keep their students in a positive frame of mindâ⬠(Green). ââ¬Å"One of the most important things that a teacher can do is be prepared for the students that come into their classroom. It does take time to make sure the teacher is prepared and ready to teach their classâ⬠(Davis). Most teachers really do not know what to expect from year to year and sometimes it gets even hard with the students, parents, and support system. Most of the students will have someone that they can have to come to the class but most of the parents in this day and hour are too busy to do anything but work and try to feed the child. I feel likeâ⬠we must give the teacher some type of assistance to make sure they are successful as well as to make sure they have a clear plan of action to teachâ⬠(Christou). Most of the students will watch their teacher to make sure they know what they are talking about. This has been one of the most frustrating parts of a class and in any place where someone is trying to teach you something they donââ¬â¢t know themselves. A lot of the students do have a learning disorder and some of them will ask questions because they really donââ¬â¢t know what you are saying. They are trying to make sure they understand what is being taught by the teacher. It is not to try to cause problems but to try to understand what is being taught. And the teacher needs to know when the student is really playing and when they are not. As a lot of students have been sent to the office or outside because of asking a question that they really did not understand and someone might have laughed causing the teacher to think they were playing. They send the student outside. Thus making it even harder for the student to learn and to understand clearly what is being said. ââ¬Å"There has to be a safe environment for the student to learn. A lot of the parents are thinking more and more about home schooling their children because it is a little safer and easier for a traveling parentâ⬠(Christou). I think if a student feels that he is not safe in the classroom he will not learn and he will always be looking around the room trying to see what is going on. He will begin to see things out of place and every time someone comes to the door or the window the student will be looking and not paying attention to the teacher at all. The main thing is that they student needs to be able to feel like they can ask any question and it not be a problem, and that no one will be laughing at them for the question that they have asked. A lot of students will shut down when they feel like they cannot express themselves, let the teacher know when they are in trouble, and need some extra help. Most of the students really need to know that the teacher is doing all they can to keep order in the class room and to make sure that it is a nice pleasant place to learn and to share idea and even to fuss sometime as long as it is going to help and bring about clarity. Without a doubt, all students need to be pushed and made to learn beyond their own understanding. There should not be a student in there who is not working their brain and able to sleep all day and still pass. Something is wrong with that and someone needs to retest that student and make sure they are on their grade level. A lot of students will not learn too well when the class is too slow for them. They will get bored really fast and not want to do nothing but cause problems because they are bored. I feel like a lot of the students that sleep in class and still walk out of the class with a passing grade need to be evaluated to determine their I. Q. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s about pushing students to excel; at the same time, itââ¬â¢s about being human, respecting others, and being professional at all timesâ⬠(Leblanc). So they can make sure they push them to their max. Most students never really understand all the class room and it takes a great teacher to be like bridge between the class work and the grades. Sometimes the bridge does try to fall, but, it is a good bridge and it is able to keep the peace. Understand that sometimes it is overrun with words, people, and it has to be patient and understand that it will all pay off in the long run. In this day and hour every job is not just a job. There are many people today who are looking for a job and some of them just are able to pass test because of having book smarts. Some are only teaching in school for a paycheck and to be able to make a living. A teacher needs to be someone who loves what he/ she can do. They do not need to be thinking about a check or about paying bills. Most of them really need to be stable and able to keep their family and personal life separate. The person who wants to be a teacher needs to be more than just someone going for a job. As time passes it is important for the person to know why they are in the class room and to understand their role in shaping the lives of their students. They must understand that at this age most of the students will spend more time with them than at the house with their parents. Most of the students will begin to attach themselves to the class room as they will feel like they were trying to look forward and not behind. Most of them will find a teacher who they relate to and who they feel has their best interest at heart. It is important for teacher to understand that most of the students will watch their every move and how they react. Some of them will even try to copy how the teacher talks, walks, and even how some of them dress. Most of the students want to be a part of something or belong to something for a greater cause. So it is important that most teachers understand their role, be mindful of their actions and understand that someone will always be watching their every move. A teacher has to show that they want to be there and really enjoy helping people. I have always been in a class room where I have heard a lot of my teacher say ââ¬Å"I got my degree now youââ¬â¢ve got to get yoursâ⬠and some of them even have an attitude with it. This is one of the reasons why I hated school and why I felt that I was cheated of my education when I was in school. Most students really donââ¬â¢t want to be in school so when they already donââ¬â¢t want to be there, and run into something like this, it makes it hard for the student to look past what they see and hear. This is causing a lot of high school students to drop out at the 10th grade. They really do not understand that they are almost there. But we have to take control of this, put a stop to it, and let them know that we do care about them, want them to finish school, be able to learn and be productive in the world today. ââ¬Å"Effective teachers should exhibit positive expectations to ensure each student believes they can excel. Transmitting positive reinforcement by telling each student they have high abilities and are a capable learner will allow students to excel to their highest abilities. In addition, setting positive expectations in the classroom will help students who do not have proper motivation and support at homeâ⬠(Baker). A teacher never needs to tell a student I got my degree and what about you. Most of the student will always do what they hear and what they see. Most of them are smart enough to understand right from wrong. But it gets worst then they begin to see the teacher doing one thing and then doing something different. A good teacher is hard to find. One that really loves to be in the class with the student and is effective in what they teach. I have only had a few that have really left me with wanting to teach because of what they taught me and this is what a good teacher is. I feel that every student that goes to class should have the benefit of a great teacher. One that is prepared for the class and apt to teach with clarity and understanding. It is not always good to have one that is just doing it because of a Job. This is what makes the world better. As we learn every day and if we listen we are always in a class of some type. I want to be as clear as possible with everything I do and say so that it will help other teachers to take pride in their craft. APPENDIX A REFERENCES Brackett, Nancy. Emotions ââ¬Å"No PDA!â⬠I will continue to hear through out my day when I went from class to class at the midst of passing period during high school and middle school. I never knew what teachers meant by saying that until they would start to get on my case about showing some affection to the girlfriend I had at that time. That was when I learned that ââ¬Å"PDAâ⬠abbreviates Public Display of Affection and one of the first times I learned an American display rule. At the same time, I believe some manners may contribute to the display rules. Then, the topic of it is ââ¬Å"unmanlyâ⬠for a man to show their emotions. The other discussion about holding in anger opposed to expressing it. I believe there are limitations to how men show their emotions, but I do believe that men should be able to show their emotions. Also, anyone should be able express his or her emotions instead of holding it and letting it all come out all at once. First, Some of the American display rule s are manners. As an example, when I was younger I was taught it is unacceptable to belch and not say excuse me at the table with even if the situation is accidental. My mother would poke arm or pinch my arm as punishment until I would say those majestic words to make my arm stop hurting. I completely understand why burping at without saying excuse me is unacceptable now. No one wants to hear anyone else let out gas in any way. It may have a disgusting same that follows it, and is so unexpected that the belch may offend someone.Show MoreRelatedSonic 1000 Pda Marketing Analysis9563 Words à |à 39 PagesRunning head: MARKETING ANALYSIS OF SONIC PDA 1000 Marketing Analysis of Sonic PDA 1000 Abstract The purpose of this group project is to provide the members of LU BUSI-520 Delta Group with a patterned professional forecasting model for research and analysis of a prospective new product. The Theme of Love Essay - 2246 Words
The Theme of Love ââ¬Å"Romantic love, physical love, unrequited love, obsessive love.â⬠Compare the ways the poets have written about the theme of love, bringing out different aspects of it. In the six poems I have studied, I see a wide range of different types of love mentioned. I will be looking at 3 poems in depth. These are: ââ¬Å"Porphyriaââ¬â¢s Loverâ⬠, written by Robert Browning, ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠, written by the Duke of Ferrara and ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠, written by Andrew Marvell. When it comes to romantic love, ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠contains some elements of it. ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠also includes aspects of physical love. When it comes to unrequited love, ââ¬Å"Porphyriaââ¬â¢s Loverâ⬠and ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠hold a large scale inâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Both poems have no stanzas. This has a sense of narrative and has the story unfolding. ââ¬Å"Porphyriaââ¬â¢s Loverâ⬠is a poem set in the 1970s, in a warm and safe cottage, where there would seem to be comfort. However, outside the weather is stormy and angry where mayhem is approaching. The ââ¬Å"sullenâ⬠wind and theâ⬠vexedâ⬠lake are images/metaphors that, not only, describe the setting but what is on the narratorââ¬â¢s mind. Outside it is windy and stormy; the weather is reflecting the sense of the narratorââ¬â¢s feelings and mood, which in this case, is anger and violent. Porphyria is linked to the storm as she thinks it is a safe place to get away from it, when really she is making matters worse by going into the cottage. The storm shows a churn of danger in the horizon. There is then a change of atmosphere at lines 6, where it describes Porphria making herself at home, not knowing her fate. The speaker/Lover is monitoring Porphyriaââ¬â¢s action and is making awareness of what she is doing. He explains everything methodically. He lists the order of tasks she does: she shuts out the cold, kneels down, makes a fire, takes off her coat, and sits by his side. This can be seen as obsessive, as he is observing everything she is does. Ralph Waldo Emerson And Henry David Thoreau Essay - 723 Words
A huge dimension of our wellness and culture as humans, our spirituality, is affected by nature. Nature, in its grandeur, has inspired theological thought in many people. A particular movement in history that exemplified this was Transcendentalism. Two particularly famous transcendentalists were Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Ralph Waldo Emersonââ¬â¢s renowned essay, ââ¬Å"Natureâ⬠demonstrates the transcendentalistsââ¬â¢ fascination with the natural world and their belief in its divinity. A fantastic quote from ââ¬Å"Natureâ⬠is ââ¬Å"Within these plantations of God, a decorum and sanctity reign, a perennial festival is dressed, and the guest sees not how he should tire of them in a thousand years.â⬠In this quote, Emerson refers to nature as ââ¬Å"Godââ¬â¢s plantationâ⬠, which clearly shows his belief, which is shared by many transcendentalists, that nature is holy and connected to God. Henry David Thoreauââ¬â¢s classic book Walden demonstrates similar ideas. In amount up, this paper gets to the point that warm up activity is the best manner for believing in mark linguistic communication, puting for the new lesson, concentrating on the subject, and pulling the attending. Therefore, it should be short, interesting, related to the subject, and be at the pupils level or somewhat above ( i+1 ) to hold their consequence in larning the 2nd linguistic communication. Description of the Opportunity In order to launch a new business in a country, it is necessary to pay the attention to the economic structure in a specific way (Chen and Zhang 2015). Once the opportunity is identified, it is essential to describe them in a structured way. The business opportunities for the entrepreneurs are mainly based on three basic criteria. The first and foremost demands of the opportunity description are to recognize the need or the problem. The business is needed to be structured in order to resolve the addressed problem. The need and demands are always intangible (Shrader and Hills 2015). Hence, it is necessary to address and resolve the identified issues by launching the necessary product or services. In order to avail the opportunities, it is essential to develop the innovative business ideas that can satisfy the needs and the demands of the target customers. The customers usually seek for the value added services and the convenient services from the company (Gartner, Carter and Hills 2016). Therefore, it is essential to keep the concentration on the best business features that cannot be replicated by other competitors. Description of the target market is essential for every entrepreneurship businesses. An entrepreneur usually builds up the idea of establishing the business entity that can satisfy the demands of the customers and ensure profitability for long run (Maine, Soh and Dos Santos 2015). Hence, it is essential to set the target market and develop the product or service as per their needs and convenience. These three major factors are essential for an entrepreneurship business in terms of availing the market opportunities. In case of FoodieFit, it has been noted that the target customer is the business professionals who face trouble in preparing healthy food due to lack of time. They usually end up having high-calorie food for their breakfast and lunch. However, it is essential for them to consumer the healthy food to stay fit and competitive. Therefore, the company has the significant opportunity to deliver the demanding foods to these business professionals by keeping focus on the healthy diets. Moreover, the company is also focusing on providing the healthy diet charts to these business professionals for keeping them fit. The identification of the sources to take the orders is necessary for the company. In such cases, the online media would be much preferable. People can order their breakfast or lunch through online sites, and the foods will be delivered to the customers. Such conv enience would be much attractive to the target customers. The advancements of the technologies are even enhancing the scope of sustaining and increasing the business market shares for the entrepreneurs. Therefore, the business has the significant opportunities to launch the business. Analysis of the Opportunity It is already mentioned that the opportunities are needed to be created by ensuring the sufficient resources and capabilities of the business (Mainela, Puhakka and Servais 2014). The business market demands the fulfillment of the customers needs, organizing the internal activities, and earning profitability for the business growth. The FoodieFit is launched for delivering the healthy foods for breakfasts and lunches for the business professionals in Mauritius. The company also attempts to provide the healthy diet charts to these business professionals since they are much conscious about their health. However, one of the major factors that the entrepreneurship business needs to be concerned about is the market feasibility (cs, Autio and Szerb 2014). It is essential for the business to understand the economic structure of the market. Moreover, the acceptability of the business in the market is also necessary to be recognized. Hence, this section of the study will recognize the feasibil ity of the Mauritius market structure for launching this food delivery business by FoodieFit. The analysis of the market and the economic structure will be discussed in this section of the study. Accordingly, the study will also highlight whether this entrepreneurship business will be able to grow in this market for long run or not. Industry/ Market Currently, Mauritius is supporting the women rights to earn by establishing their entrepreneurship businesses, be it delivering the Tiffin services or clothes. The Mauritius government is recognizing the current trends on the market that may help in growing economy of the country. The people in the country are much concerned about their health. They prefer the healthy and nutritious food (Kumar 2015). However, the current competition in the business markets does not allow them to invest more time on preparing the healthy food for the breakfasts and lunches. Therefore, there are the demands of healthy Tiffin services. There is the high demand of the Tiffin or nutritious food delivery services for the business professionals. However, it is noted that the people in Mauritius prefer lower price of the products and services due to the lower economy growth. Hence, while structuring the new business entity, it is necessary to understand the market feasibility and the demands of the customer s (Smith, Halton, and Strachan 2014). Moreover, the sequential parameter of the customers preferences is also necessary to be developed. The use of the online media and online sites for ordering foods and clothes is also in trend. Therefore, the food delivery services will be operated via online mediums. Economics It is reported that the economic structure of Mauritius market grew only 3% in the year of 2015. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) confirmed that if the country can undertake the sound economic policies, it would favor the medium-term outlook in a significant way. It is significantly noticed that various challenges are the reasons behind the slow growth of Mauritius economy. The market has the sensitive pricing structure (Beedessee, Ramanjooloo and Marie 2015). The purchasers often have to give the best effort to find the best deal of the use of the products or the services. The current market is highlighting the growing trend by providing the best services or products at lowest prices. In fact, it has been observed that the disposable income is in the verge of declining that has been leading the customers towards become more cautious about the spending behaviour (Howwemadeitinafrica.com 2017). As a result, some of the projects have been facing the recognizable challenges in main taining the proper financial structure (Vossenberg 2013). However, there is the solution for mitigating the issues faced by the financial sectors of the country. The increasing level of the entrepreneurship businesses and the confidence in the business growth can remarkably increase the economic growth in Mauritius (Marketresearchreports.biz 2017). Similarly, FoodieFit needs to develop the e-business at the initial stage to minimize the venture costs and increase the profit parameter. If the company can deal through the online websites, it will be much cost-effective. In fact, the company even needs to pay attention towards the pricing structure of the foods that depends on the economic parameter of the entire Mauritius. Personal Criteria The identification of the market trend and economic structure highlights the feasibility of opening this entrepreneurship business. However, apart from paying attention towards such factors, it is necessary to keep the focus on several personal criteria as well. The company has the significant opportunity to deliver the demanding foods to these business professionals by keeping focus on the healthy diets. For example, the business needs to consider the target market, the budget, and the selected medium for business promotions. FoodieFit is aiming to provide the food services to the working professionals who have lesser time to prepare the healthy foods for their breakfast. The target market for the business is thus the business class people who are much conscious about the healthy diet. This entrepreneurship company has decided to invest MUR150000- MUR200000 for establishing the venture. The budget will be utilized for purchasing the ingredient to prepare the food, delivery charges, the shipping facilities, ventures, the online websites, and the promotional activities (Boso et al. 2016). On the other hand, the selection of the relevant promotional media is also necessary to spread the awareness among the target customer group (Lundstrm et al. 2014). The business may establish the online official websites for providing the information to the business officials. The leaflet type menu cards can be handed over to the corporate areas in Mauritius. The positive word of mouth will also help the business to spread awareness among the corporates or the working professionals in Mauritius. Conclusions The entire study determines that FoodieFit has the sheer opportunity to establish the entrepreneurship business in Mauritius market. However, the slow growth of the economy can be the obstacle for expecting the future growth. The problem can be resolved if the entrepreneurship businesses are established. In such cases, it is necessary for FoodFit to keep the prices lower. The company aims to provide the healthy meal to the working professionals or corporates across Mauritius. In addition to this, the company would also provide the healthy diet advices to the corporates for their healthy living. In order to avail the opportunities underlying the market, it is essential to identify the market opportunities and the fruitful techniques to avail these opportunities in a significant way.
